I can teach you how to Dougie

Ya know why?

I can break it down. 4 times on the big screen Friday night! A great end to a great week (plus 6 pro sporting events in 8 days). This was the first week in a while that I was able to get a solid 41 miles in running. Now I feel like a bum since I am on the second of 2 days of recover, but whatever right?  It happens.  Don’t essentially need it, but from a mental standpoint I wanted to… plus, later this week I’ll tell you why I’m doing whatever I freaking want today!

My parents were in town this week and I had a great time with them!  It was the first time I had seen them in over 3 months… or anyone that hasn’t been brand new to me. On that note, if you’ve never just thrown yourself into something brand new, do it- it’s worth it.  My dad got in Wednesday and after I picked him up at the airport, we went to a local bar so he could grab a beer and some food.  Here’s what he got:

Salmon Hot Brown

A salmon hot brown… basically an open-face sandwich with salmon, cheese, a sauce (?) and some fries. The  next morning, I dropped him at the hotel while my mom flew in, smashed it at the gym, then met them for a Reds vs. Astros baseball game. We had great seats on the Third base line and I got toasted in the sun!  It was awesome.

View from our seats on the Astros dugout

Thanks to my man David for hooking it up with the seats. The Astros actually won!

After the game we headed over to the famous Montgomery Inn for some BBQ.  I had BBQ chicken breast with a sweet potato on the side and both parents had the brisket sandwich with a sweet potato as well.  Really Really good, but not quite Dinosaur BBQ level.

Chicken Breasts for me

Mom's brisket

Pops brisket

Friday night, I met them again after I went to work and we went to dinner.  After that we went to Cyclones playoff hockey game.  This couldn’t have been better since both my dad and I are huge hockey fans and it just so happened the cyclones had a home game for the first round of the playoffs!  The lost. It’s all good though. I went to the game Saturday night which they lost as well so they’re out of the playoffs.  After the game I said goodbye to my parents and they went back since they’re flight was early Saturday morning.

Back to triathlons. I realized a few things this weekend.  Wildflower is going to be what it’s going to be.  I’m not expecting to PR (although I’ll try of course) but it will fun and will be great training. I also learned that I can still ride my bike. Sunday, I met up with a few other triathletes and did a long ride.  We ended up with about 70 miles even though we had to ride slow sometimes and we picked up and then dropped a group of slower riders.  Ended up with about 70 miles though, which I will take being it my 3rd ride of the year.  It was gorgeous on Sunday too!  80 degrees and sunny!  Hello tri top and GPS watch sunburn lines- I missed yall!

I also learned to importance of hydration and nutrition even when you think you are spot on…

To sum the week up, it overall went really well!  Here at the totals (ish)

  • 41 miles running
  • 2 spins
  • 1 long ride of 70 miles
  • 2 swims

This week I’m aiming for around 40 miles again (but focusing on quality over junk miles), 3 swims (6,000m total goal) 1 spin, and 2 outdoor rides with tempo brick runs!

After the 70 miles on Sunday, my legs felt good, but I was hungry lol.  I came home and ate and grabbed a hard nap before waking up and hitting up the treadmill for a goal of a 10k.  I felt awesome- but at about 30 minutes, or 4.5 miles, wham!  I felt like a ton of bricks hit me- I got water and drank a bunch and tried to run again a few times, but it just wasn’t happening!  I felt ok, I was able to jump on the elliptical for 20 more hard minutes but running was just out of the question.  Lesson learned: better fueling ON the bike!  No matter how well you eat after.  I also waited too long to eat after as well… my eating disorder telling me, “don’t eat yet, just wait till you get home.”   …Idiot.

But lessons learned are lessons learned and thats how we get better.

Next week I am going to be doing a guest post for the Athlete’s Plate on Jason’s blog at Cook, Train, Eat, Race.  Another awesome triathlete who makes a meal plan for once a week for a lucky blogger and I am honored enough to a post in his place next week!  Anything you guys want to see?

So tell me:

  1. What lessons, good or bad, have you learned this week?
  2. What new recipes do you have for me to try?  I’m jonesin’ for something new!
  3. Do you need to learn how to Dougie?

I can teach you how to Dougie

Stay tuned later this week for my big announcement!

Oh, and I actually got up in the midst of writing this and did an incredibly slow 5 mile run.  Hopefully it will help me feel better for tomorrow!

Dinosaur B-Brady-Q

I am loving Cincinnati so far.  Granted, I haven’t done much, but I took on some big challenges and steps today and, your know what?  I feel great and strong!  I didn’t hit the complete goals set between my nutritionist and I, but I challenged myself to include more “goodness” in my diet today and I feel stronger for it!  I also checked out the University of Cincinnati Rec Center today… and tore it up!  It’s an awesome facility with weights, cardio, and an awesome pool so I can swim every day!  Today I did:

  • 10.07 miles in 1:06:00, 6:33 min/mile
  • 30 minutes hard intervals on the elliptical
  • 25 minutes intervals on the bike
  • Burpees, push ups, and abs

Ate well before this workout and I think it helped big time!  I also ate well when I got home and included proper post workout nutrition.  Here the recipe I started my day with–some HoneyMilk Oatmeal!

  • 8 oz. Honey Flavor HoneyMilk
  • 3/4 cup dry oats
  • 1 chopped banana
  • 1-2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • Cinnamon to taste

Ingredients

Cook in the microwave for 2-3 depending on the consistency you like.  You can add the peanut butter either before or after…or both!  I personally like to do it after so I can eat some of the peanut butter straight haha.

Delicious... and I had crazy good energy today!

So in my next post, I want to discuss my goals and resolutions for 2011.  But that will be a long post, so before that, y’all need to check out my trip to Dinosaur BBQ over Christmas break!  While what I ordered was completely healthy, eating food I can’t control the preparation for is always hard for me.  However, being the Dinosaur BBQ is so good, I’m going to try and not even talk about my issues in this!  Just enjoy!

Outside...Rochester, New York

We got there right as the hockey game was over on Sunday night.  Even though we sent my mom and aunt ahead there was a pretty long wait… So I stood by the bar and talked to the guys working there and saw the orders going out:

Random tray of awesomeness

As we waited, we saw that one of the rooms was blocked off and was being manned by one of the biker dudes from Dinosaur… Turns out it was because probably half of the New England Patriots we in there!  It was most of the offense, definitely the offensive line.  Not to mention, running back Danny Woodhead, and the one and only, Tom Brady!  I’m not a huge Patriots fan, but this was pretty awesome.  I stood next to Woodhead headed to the bar…I couldn’t see Brady though. Finally, right before we left, I walked by the room and as I looked in, I looked right at him.  Pretty cool haha.  Apparently due to the storm, they couldn’t fly home, so hit up some BBQ awesomeness in Rochester!

Anyways, here’s what we had to eat:

BBQ chicken Plate (2 breasts for me): Apple brined, pit smoked and slathered with our original Senuous Slatherin' BBQ Sauce. I got healthy sides of rice and black beans

My brother Stewart: 3/4 rack St. Louis cut ribs are dry rubbed and slow pit smoked, then lightly glazed with our original BBQ sauce

Cousin Jay: Traditional Sampler: 1/4 Chicken(leg+thigh), 1/4 Rack of ribs & sliced Texas Beef Brisket..... What a goof

My cousin Colin also got the Tres Hombres: Spirited servings of Bar-B-Que pork, sliced Texas Beef Brisket and 1/4 rack of ribs.

I love eating with these guys… They are all healthy–Colin nearly went pro in the NFL after playing Corner for Cornell, and it helps me to see them eat real food, be happy, and NOT WORRY about it!

That’s all… More posts soon!

  1. Ever been to/heard of Dinosaur BBQ?
  2. Do you workout at a college Rec Center or a public gym?  What do you like/not like about it?

I’m going to do it!

At 9:30 Friday I finished dinner, threw my bag in the car and headed up to DC to go home for the weekend.  I realized while at the gym that evening that I hadn’t seen my family is like 2 months and really wanted to see them, plus I had no plans for the weekend.  I also knew, that if I want to do this Richmond Marathon, I needed to do a long run and see how my body reacted.  Well since the only group I knew going out for a long run wanted to leave at 6:30AM and I was well aware there was no way I was going to get up that early to meet them.  So, by heading home I knew I had a trail to run and that I could know how far I was going.

So at 3:30 Saturday afternoon, I set out for a 20-mile run.   Here’s the breakfast I ate earlier that morning to top up my stores: Protein oats with egg

Oats, protein, greek yogurt

Pre-egg

Post-egg before micorwaving....Not real appetizing, I know

The result- plus cinnamon

Stir it all together.  No point in doing the egg like I did- just mix it in with the rest of the ingredients at the beginning.  Makes the oats a little lighter and creamier.

Then before heading out I snagged some bread from Great Harvest Bread Co.  The Honey Wheat bread is great.  I also took 2 gels with me on the run (could have taken more, but a smart move nonetheless).  2 hours and 32 minutes later, I had gone 20.22 miles!  A pace of 7:31.  The run felt pretty good- my cardiovascular system felt pretty solid, but legs weren’t moving as I would like them…they tired before my lungs.  Other than that, it was just a little boring, as I ran 3 loops of 4.5 mile trail for the bulk of the run haha.

So I’m going to do it- I’m registering for Richmond Marathon right now!  It will be a challenge, but it’s something I’ve never done and something I want to accomplish. After this race on November 13th, I think it will be pretty important for me to take some time “off”.  What this means, I’m not sure yet, but I know I can’t wait to get back to some lifting!  I know I’ve probably lost a lot of muscle this year, and while I haven’t really felt it, I know it will help when it comes to my legs getting tired like on the 20-miler!

That night I got to enjoy a fantastic meal with my mom and dad…not sure where my sister was.  We did sweet potatoes and bbq chicken smoked on a cedar plank on the grill!  It was amazing- my dad is a grill master, no lie!

Hot off the grill

I want to the Lizzy from http://lizzyj1305.wordpress.com/ for an awesome package in the mail and recipe suggestion!  Along with some peanut butter, she sent some Salted Peanuts (from Trader Joes!) and suggest I try them on a sweet potato

Salty sweet peanut potato

I other favorite way to top the sweet potato is with candied pecans of walnuts!  What do you like?

I also had 2 jars of peanut butter than I wanted to try mixing.  I mixed a banana flavor peanut butter with Dark Chocolate Dreams!  Choco-nana peanut butter; great stuff!

Banana PB and Dark chocolate Dreams

All stirred together!

I also made some new recipes for your guys while I was home!  Check back later this week for recipes of Chicken Chili Stew and pumpkin cornbread!

Time to fill out the rest of this registration form!  Anyone else doing this race??

  1. What are your favorite seasonal foods that are becoming available now?  And do you have untraditional uses for pumpkin?
  2. What’s the greatest achievement you’ve made this year ?  Share it here so everyone can see!

Lastly, I want to share something Rebekah of http://www.clarityincreation.blogspot.com/ shared with me today.  I was having a hard day because I chose to sleep rather than workout after work and I was stressing.  She told me, “Life is about health, and Eating Disorders are only about Death, so don’t give in to it!”

I loved that- will be carrying it with me all week.

Looking Ahead

Hey guys!  I know I haven’t posted in a while.  I was waiting to find out whether or not I qualified for ITU Triathlon Worlds, but at this point I’m not holding my breath.  I also said I was going to do a full race report, but honestly, I really don’t feel like it.  I’m happy with how I finished and what my times were!  Let’s just say that never before had I seen so many millions of dollars in a 100X200 yard transition area, all draped haphazardly over cheap aluminum racks.

I’d also like to give some thanks to those who made this biggest race of my life possible

  • HoneyMilk for pre and post race nutrition–check them out at www.HoneyMilk.com
  • GU nutrition for my during race nutrition– www.GUenergy.com
  • Lowes Grocery Store in Myrtle Beach–for having samples of fruit in their produce department when I “sampled” about 5-6 pieces of fruit after the race
  • To all of you who read my blog and gave me support for this race!  I honestly called some of your kind words into mind when the run got tough and it really helped get me through.  So thank you all.

Here are some race picutres…they really didn’t have any good ones

Start--No swim so we acted like we were coming out of the swim transition

Running out of T1

Lap 1

Lap 2

I’ll let you all know what I found out about worlds.  But LOOKING AHEAD to next week, I leave Friday for my last race of the Triathlon season to Austin Texas for my first Official Ironman sanctioned event.  It’s at these events that people qualify for Ironman Kona or Clearwater 70.3 Ironman Championships!  Speaking of Ironman Kona World Championships, did anyone watch it yesterday and see Chris McCormack win it?  It was awesome- not to mention I met and talked to him at Alcatraz back in May!

I can’t wait to get to Austin.  Not quite sure how I am going to get around at all or who I will have to hang out with, but I’ll figure it out.  Will anyone be in Austin, or know anyone there who could help me out? : )

Training has been good this week.  Here’s what it has looked like since I got my legs back on Wednesday:

  • Wednesday: 9-mile run (60 minutes), 45 min spin workout, 15 minutes elliptical
  • Thurs: 60-min spin class, 6.2 mile run, 10 min elliptical
  • Friday:  Off–3 hours of sleep made my body say, “no way!”
  • Saturday: 7.5 miles, 45min spin, 1.5 mile run, 15 min elliptical
  • Sunday: 7.5 mile (50 mins), 45-min spin, 15 elliptical, 5X2 minute sprint on row machine with weight lifting

The rest of the week will be similar, plus swims Wednesday and Thursday–Race day is Sunday!  This has been pretty intense and I’m pretty tired.  To make sure I have energy though, I’ve been trying to eat well.  Here’s a recipe I made one night…pretty much healthiest meal possible.  It was a scramble featuring Egg Beaters, 96% lean ground beef, and sliced avocado!  How can you beat that mix of lean protein, essential amino acids, and essential fats?!  I served it all over a baked sweet potato.  This sweet savory mix was incredible…really!

Ground beef, mushrooms, onion

Add Egg Beaters

Baked sweet potato with savory spices

Scramble over the sweet potato topped with 1/2 avocado!

Now I have some chicken breast (already cooked) and a little bit of ground beef left that I want to use tomorrow–thinking about mixing it together with a tomato sauce and having over a baked sweet potato again; thoughts??  Maybe some cheddar on there?

Last night I went to my friend Trey’s house for dinner.  He and I went to William and Mary together and now work together as well.  We’d been swapping CrockPot recipes and he invited me over to the my LSU Tigers beat up on the Florida Gators and enjoy some BBQ chicken breast.  I brought broccoli, buns, and potatoes to complete the feast.

Trey and his plate

Mad props Trey, the chicken was great!  I served mine of a baked potato and had it with fresh steamed broccoli.  I need this after that workout!

BBQ Chicken

Potato...like an open mouth waiting for bbq goodness...

Really tasty

As I was running the other day, I realized I hadn’t truly “sprinted” in a while.  I mean, I had run “all out” but when was the last time I truly pushed my body as hard as I could and really tried to discover what I can do?  I bet if I asked that to most people, they wouldn’t know either.  30 minutes on an Elliptical machine, reading a magazine, probably isn’t pushing you to limits not met before.  So I have been incorporating sprints mid-workout (biking and running) more and more.  Not only are they fantastic for your fitness level and overall health, but it feels incredibly rewarding to find out what you can do.

Thanks again for your support everyone, it truly means so much to me!

  1. Do you have any recipes that mix sweet and savory ingredients?
  2. When was the last time you sprinted, or pushed yourself, hard??

Ok, I lied…

I feel like I’ve been planning this post all week!  I meant to write since Thursday but busy night have led me to not.  Stretching, foam rolling, and making lunch (plus breakfast and snack) take a long time each night!  This week has been alright- After posting my planned schedule on Monday, my planned day off, I was all set for the rest of the week.  Well, I ended up taking Wednesday off which ended up being a really bad and tough day…my eating disorder won BIG time.  But anyways, that meant I had some training to make up!

  • Thursday: 44 mile bike (18.8 mph), 11.5 mile run at 7:10 pace, 900m swim (900m??  Yeah I know, but I only had 20 minutes before the pool closed
  • Friday: 7.5 mile run, 50 minute spin workout, 20 min elliptical intervals, quick lift
  • Saturday:  Hardest run ever…legs were realllll tired- 4.5 miles, then 2x 1.5 miles with elliptical intervals between
  • Sunday (today): 72 mile bike, 6 mile run

If I thought my legs hurt Saturday, that just made them even more tired today.  And I hate the wind here… I’m still losing- Chuck: 2, Wind: 5.  I overslept so I missed riding with my buddy, but went out a little later on my own.  It was grueling, but I got it done.  Hopefully I’ll be stronger from it  But I bailed on my swim and on yoga….both of which I need.  So I must get in the pool this week!  If you guys can make sure I do that, that would be great haha

So I have a ton of food pics from this week.  I lied, and you guys were right- WHEN THEY ARE PERFECT, avocados are delicious!  But only when they are perfectly ripe, and heated to that they are creamy.  The creaminess is sooo clutch, but if they are under-ripe, then they are just gross.  Here is the best meal I had, which I made Thursday night and tonight.  BBQ wraps using that bbq meat I made, cheddar cheese, and a quarter avocado- awesome!

bbq meat, avocado, cheddat

Melted! So the avocado got extra creamy

Friday night, I wanted to save some the bbq meat, so I decided on an omelet.  This time, I actually made it like you are supposed to instead of trying to do my “open-face” omelet.  Again, I added a half of the avocado with some light cheese.  Whole eggs and avocado…daammmmnnnn thats healthy!

Getting ready

With steamed vegetables and plain baked potato

Love that butternut squash too.

I was talking to Matt (www.Kitchenofarunner.com) and we were discussing oatmeal, and he insisted that I make and taking pics of a new recipe I had been thinking about.  This was plain oatmeal cooked in almond milk with cinnamon

Before cooking

Then I cooked it together and added in the protein powder.  I added the peanut butter after the picture

Extra smooth

Overall, a really good breakfast!

I still have a lot more pictures and a new recipe, plus a bunch of goodies from sponsors to show you!  So check back tomorrow!

  1. What are some ways you use avocados? Besides in salads or guacamole; I mean unique ways…could I mash it into a baked potato, for example?
  2. What are some weird/random things that weird you out? (not eating disorder related please).  Me: I hate the seeds in tomatoes and the very very tips of bananas sketch me out haha
  3. Anyone got a swim workout for me?

Night yall!
