Do You

Success!

Movement March was a success! Every day in March I worked out for at least 30 minutes!  I’m really proud of this to be honest and I was also successful in 2 different races. I have taken the past 2 days off and just chilled out and am preparing for an epic peak as I move into this last month before Wildflower. I am going to be ON POINT this next month- great workouts, correct nutrition, and a huge focus on sleeping more!

That moves me to my next challenge for April- which I must do. First, no coming home from work, taking a nap, and then working out.  This gets me to bed too late and just leaves me tired again the next day. Second, not getting up on a weekend, having breakfast, and going back to bed until I go workout.  I will instead go workout in the morning which not only guarantee I go, but also leave me with time in the rest of my day to do stuff.

Something that I have been struggling with a little bit lately is the need to compare. To compare myself to other athletes, and more notably, other bloggers.  I know this is something that a lot of people have written about before, but it really hits home.  When I go on a blog and see that this person ate this (or didn’t eat this) and that they did this workout etc.  Not a big deal if I’ve worked out that day, but if I’ve taken a day off it just makes me feel guilty and awful. I know that I like to Tweet the workout I did after I do it every day and now I’m considering stopping it due to that.  The reason I do it is to keep accountable to myself and because I’m usually so happy after a workout… and Twitter is basically just a steam of consciousness anyway, but you see my point.

Do you ever feel the same way? Here’s what you’ve got to remember:  First, everyone is different! Metabolisms, athletic ability, genes, preferences and so on.  Maybe you see that some “did the elliptical for an hour” and you compare and feel bad for only running for 30 minutes or something.  What I need to remind myself is that everyone is training for different things! Not everyone wants to do Ironman triathlons, Chuck, and that they probably enjoy a good session on the elliptical. I also know that I probably balled out on my run so there is no winner or loser- no one is better or less of a person or athlete based on how they workout!  I can’t tell myself that I’m not as good as someone else based upon a workout!  There’s more to life than clocking hours and miles and calories- “Chuck” is not defined by how much I workout, but instead by the person I really am, my desire, my passion, and the love that I can show to others.

In short, do you. Don’t let comparing yourself to others define you.

Saturday was my first day of going to the gym in the morning (in April, that is).  This was because my friend Thadd and I were going to opening night for the Cincinnati Reds!  It was an awesome day- I had a great workout that really tested me and I also finished it with a 3,100m swim which is one of the longest I’ve done in a long time!

Thursday was the Reds opening day and I got out to take a few pictures:

Reds fans on Fountain Square

My favorite float was the giant inflatable Chiquita bananas. Skyline Chili was also on hand to serve chili coneys… I MAY try the chili before I leave Cincinnati… but maybe not lol

Cheese Coney

Before the game Saturday, we headed out to get some food.  The night before a bunch of us went to the Cyclones Hockey game as got some input on where to go.  I was jonesin’ for some pizza so went to a place with a brick oven.  Not only was the pizza great, it was so healthy too!  Paper thin crust, fresh Roma tomatoes and basil, topped with double chicken breast!

Thadd's meatball flatbread

The game was awesome, the Reds won, and there were fireworks after!

Now, I also made an amazing new recipe this week!  Bison stroganoff over homemade whole wheat biscuits.

  • 8oz lean meat (I mixed bison and turkey breast)
  • 1/4 cup milk (and more liquid as needed)
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp Greek Yogurt
  • Sliced onions
  • Sliced Mushrooms

Start by browning the meat with onions

Brown the meat

Next, remove from the pan and add the flour to the now empty pan.  After letting it toast for a second, add is the milk and stir till combined.  Then add in the onions and vegetables and stir till the sauce comes together. Finally, add your meat back in and let it heat till ready to serve.

Sauce ready to go!

I then plated up a couple biscuits and served the stroganoff over top!  I even put some REAL butter on one half of a warm biscuits… killer!

2 biscuit halves

Yum. Serve with remaining biscuit halves and fresh vegetables

This was by far the best meal I had all week. Here is the biscuit “recipe” as well (if you want to call it that.)  Makes 4 biscuits:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4-1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin

Mix together, form into 4 biscuits and bake at 425 for 12-20 minutes or until they are done.

Since I made 4 biscuits, I tried a similar idea with serving Eggs Marinara over the biscuits:

Top the warm toasted biscuits with laughing cow cheese...

Eggs baked in marinara sauce, mushrooms, and onions! Atop the biscuits

A cool story from this week- through Twitter (Follow me @ChuckFeerick) I won a free entry in the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in Florida from one of my sponsors, GU Energy!  Bummer though is that I am racing Wildflower the day before, so there’s no way I could get to Florida in time without help. I proposed a pretty elaborate plan to GU to help me chronicle the cross county adventure across the US in 2 days racing in 2 epic races.  My friends over at JTwoFilms would have been able to film the whole thing and we could have made a sweet documentary!  GU liked the idea but said they couldn’t bankroll it.  Haha oh well, I tried.

On that note though, be on the look for more developments on the Feerless Food TV Show… we’re about to blow up!

Thanks for reading guys and have an awesome week!

  1. Do you every find yourself comparing yourself to other people or bloggers?
  2. What Easter goodies are you looking forward to?  Cadbury Eggs… ohhh man…

The Countdown begins

Not going to lie, I’m getting a little nervous- Patriots Half Ironman is only 2 and a half weeks away!  I’m not nervous about being able to finish or anything, I’m more nervous about how I place.  I really need to pick up the swimming in these next couple weeks because I know that’s my weakest of the 3 sports.  My training last week was good and bad.  I posted last Monday after a good bike and swim and followed that with a day off.  But then I fell into a bad pattern of talking myself out of my long brick workout.  Instead, I wound up going home and grabbing a power nap for an hour before heading to the gym.  Granted, I still go crucial runs and spin workouts on the trainer, but I was disappointed in myself for not just going straight to the gym or on a ride right after work.  This led to a vicious cycle of finishing dinner at 11 and going to bed at 3 or 4…not healthy!  I almost took Saturday completely off…like barely leaving bed (tells me how much I need to sleep right?) but wound up getting a really cool workout in.  I ran hills in my parking garage: run down from the 5th floor, sprint the stairs back up and then down, and then run the hills back up to the 5th floor- repeated 7 times!  Each up and down is like .8-miles, so it actually adds up.

I was really happy with myself today.  I left work on time, got to the gym in time to do a 2-mile run, then do an hour spin class (hard, thanks to a good instructor!), and then another 5.5-mile run of intervals.  Finished this with a good lift which ended with some hard work on the TRX equipment!  What I didn’t realize was how long I was freaking there!

This being said, I don’t mean to put these numbers up so we can start comparing ourselves to one another.  I think its important to remember not to feel bad if you read a blog about how someone works out more than you or “eats healthier”.  I used be fixed on “oh I run faster than them and ate less _________.”  Or, “crap they had a good workout today and I didn’t workout at all!”  Remember, none of this matters!  Not to mention we don’t see everyone everyday, so there’s not point in comparison.  Be proud of what you do

In an effort to get in the pool more, here’s my Triathlon training plan for the rest of the week, without details.  If I write it here, I’m more apt to do it and you guys can keep me honest!

  • Tuesday: Spin and run
  • Wednesday: Run and swim
  • Thursday: Long Bike and Run brick
  • Friday: Some mix of swim, run, and road bike
  • Saturday: Don’t know, but possible swim lesson?  Probably run intervals as well
  • Sunday: Long bike ride followed with run and then swim brick (Long day)

Let’s make it happen!  Now to what you all actually probably care about- food pics!  Even though I still had tons of left over BBQ, I try to actually cook on weekends and really wanted some English Muffin pizzas!

Ingredients: English muffins, sauce, chicken breast, chicken sausage, mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, and cheese.

Directions: Pre-Toast the english muffins in a toaster.  Then pile on your ingredients and put in the oven for 10 minutes at 375*-400*.  Eat!

Ingredients

Before they went in the oven

Bringin the heat

The sausage was good on this pizza- low fat and very spicy!  I just remembered how much I like pineapple on pizza and haven’t been using it!  I’ll make a note of that.

Here’s a meal I made Saturday night; I forgot I took a picture.  Basically a wrap that baked open face as a pizza:

"Open face toasted burrito"

Tonight I had more bbq with a sweet potato.  I topped this sweet potato with half real butter and half coconut oil.  Sounds unhealthy, but is actually REALLY healthy!  It was tough though, won’t lie.  But honestly, butter and coconut oil couldn’t be more pure and real- they total like 3 ingredients total combine.  Look at the ingredients in margarine…yeah, that’s what I thought.

Extra cinnamon on the sweet potato

Half and half

So that’s all I got!  Tomorrow I am going to challenge myself again and half avocado on the bbq wraps I am going to make.  Give me strength.  Thanks for reading yall!

  1. Would you like me to create a Workouts page?  I have been making up some good running and spinning workouts lately and thought I would share
  2. What foods are you obsessed with right now?  I have been eating steamed butternut squash along with my broccoli every night, and I’ve also found that oregano has awesome flavor when cooked like on a pizza!
  3. Does anyone have a good protein bar/thing/cookie recipe that I can try to make?

End to a long week

I’m glad this week is over! It wasn’t bad by any means, just very taxing mentally. I’ve come to realize that my working out has a huge impact on my mood and “happiness” which is ridiculous. Living knowing that I won’t be in a good mood and won’t be the person I know I am and want to be if I don’t exercise is absurd. I’ve got to learn to calm these thoughts and also not be so hard on myself when I fail to do something as planned. At the same time, I also need to treat my body better with recovery, nutrition, and sleep so that I quit asking myself everyday “am I too tired to workout?” “Should I take the day off?” “Will I get fat?” “Will I get out of shape and not be able to be highly competitive at my next race?” How about this Chuck: take care of your body, do what feels right, and do what makes you happy. I hope everyone reading this can do the same things. Life is about being happy.
I know that once I start treating my body better, I will once again fall in love with working out…not just loving the feeling I get when I am done.

This week was long as I expressed earlier this week. 3 times I went home and took a nap before going to the gym. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but all it did was lead to finishing dinner each night at 11:00. I also planned a shorter ride with a 12 mile run at some point this week. Didn’t happen. I even cleared my day yesterday to do so and wound up sleeping all day instead (hmmm body telling me something?) Then to cap it all off, today I bailed on my long ride at 8AM. That’s ok I thought, I’ll just go on my own later. Drove all the way out to where I was going to ride, rode about a quarter mile, turned around and said, not today. I guess sometimes we just have those days??

Now, this all being said, I still got a lot of good workout in. I ran over 43 miles in 5 days and got 3 specific (more in total) spin workout in on the trainer. So I accomplished a lot, just not any of the goals I set out to accomplish. I didn’t get any swims in either grrrr…haha
So that’s why I’m happy this weeks over! This coming week and I am not going to take any naps before workouts, NOT GIVE UP on any workouts, swim multiple times, and to accomplish all this, I am going to feed my body right, get the sleep I need, and do what feels right. Starting tomorrow morning, I have a great breakfast and lunch packed, some Dijon mustard coated chicken ready of dinner along with a sweet potato I’ve sliced and am going to bake with coconut oil. I’m also going to go on a 40 miles bike ride and then swim afterward. And I’m going to love it! Remember to smile and frame everything positively…it goes such a long way!
How do you overcome days when you are tired or don’t want to work out? Do you take the day off OR do you treat your body right so that those days don’t happen?

I finally tried a recipe I’ve been dying to try! After seeing it a lot of restaurants, the pictures on Matt’s blog sealed the deal for me and I finally created my “Over easy egg pizza”!  I didn’t have the awesome pizza dough Matt makes, but mine worked awesome on a big hearty tortilla.

Ingredients:

  • Large tortilla (crisped)
  • Seasonings: Oregano, ranch powder, garlic, and onion
  • Salsa
  • Additional scrambled eggs or ham (to cover the parts that the over easy egg won’t)
  • 2 Omega-3 eggs
  • Cheese

I seasoned the tortilla then baked it for about 5 minutes to get it crispy.  After this is spread on a light layer on salsa, some Egg Beater that I had scrambled with tomatoes, mushrooms, and bell peppers, and topped with cheese.  Then I added 2 Egglands Best eggs and baked for about 6-7 minutes.

Before the cheese

Added white cheddar

And fresh out of the oven…

Perfectly cooked

I was so happy with this outcome!  I didn’t over-cook the eggs at all for once and everything melted together great.  The whole pizza had an awesome flavor and I’m not sure exactly what it was, but I think heating the oregano up before adding the ingredients brought out a ton of flavor so I suggest adding extra if you like it.

Going to back to what I talked about at the beginning of this post, remember how important fuel is to our bodies!  That being said, remember to enter my giveaway for the Ben Greenfield Fitness shirt:

What a week!

Wow, what a way to finish up this week.  Next weekend I’m traveling to Richmond to Rockett’s Landing Olympic Triathlon on Sunday.  Possibly checking out some cool restaurants there, so I’ll keep you updated.

This was a big training week:

Run: 43.5 (new best), Bike: 6.5-ish hours on the bike (110 miles on the road plus a couple spin classes), Swim: 2200m- only one swim (today) but YES, I swam!  Also got a couple of good lifts in as well.

Today I rode with the guys from Final Kick.  We cranked for 3.5 hours and got over 67 miles.  I rode alone for a little bit, but we worked in some 10-minute intervals as a group as well.  Averaged 19.3mph going out and 20mph coming back!  Which was solid because I was riding alone for a lot of that.  We did do one 10-minute interval averaging 25mph which was crucial.

After this, I ran 5 miles.  Pace was a slow 7:08- my legs were hella tired not only from the ride but the week as a whole.  After this I headed to pool and swam- yeah!  Did a pyramid of 500-400-300-200-100, 5×50 on the minute, and 3 IMs.

Had a lot of good eats with week.  First, I made English Muffin Pizzas:

Ingredients: Cheese, English muffins, chicken

Toasted and sauced

Cheesed

Ta da! They were good

Tasted great, but Eat them hot!  I always am reading or doing something else while I eat so I never really eat my food hot… I should work on this…

Here’s another meal I made- Eggs Diablo!  Basically you just dump salsa in a skillet and crack the eggs in the salsa and let them poach.  The egg whites mix with the salsa a little bit and make the sauce a little thicker.  I then put the whole thing over a baked potato.  It was great, and quick!  Only problem was that it uses a lot of salsa haha

Saute the salsa and mushrooms

Crack eggs into the salsa

Over a baked potato

Well I guess that’s it.  I’ll try and update more this week so I don’t have to do long end of the week posts.  I also forget all the fun stuff I want to blog about by Sunday night when I’m smoked haha!

Questions:

  1. Whats your favorite ways to make eggs?  Got a good recipe for me?

Fueling up!

In preparation for my race this Sunday, I got a great quality session workout in today!  I did a good spin class then hit up the treadmill and did a first run of 7.6 miles.  I ran at increasing pace for the first 5k, about 21 minutes, and then a ran a tempo pace for the next 5k, about 20 minutes…felt like I probably could have gone faster.  Then I finished out to 50 minutes at a fast pace.  Then I hit up a cross-training elliptical-like machine for 20 hard minutes.  And then I thought, just go for it, and grabbed another mile on the treadmill…did it in 6:21..way faster than I was even planning on haha!  So total came out to 8.6 miles at 6:33 min/mile pace.

After the cardio, I did a core session and then grabbed a quick lift!  Four sets of:

  • 8 heavy dumbbell bench
  • 8 one-arm shoulder DB press
  • 10 dips
  • 10 lat pull down

Then I got outta there because I had been at the gym waaaay too long!  But I had a recovery drink waiting in the car!  That’s one of my goals this week is to include a quality recover meal after each workout…not only because I have a race this week, but because without doing this you basically waste your workout!!  I had a mix of whey protein isolate mixed with some flavored yogurt for the carbs.  I also took some amino acids along with it since my muscles were sucking up everything I was feeding them.  But speaking of fueling up…I got my box of Athlete’s Honey Milk today!  If you aren’t familiar with this product, go www.Honeymilk.com and check it out.  Look at my picture under the Athletes tab!

Honey Milk

This stuff tastes great and is a fantastic source of protein and carbohydrates to fuel you up for a workout or to recover after.  The best part?  The LACK of ingredients!  Check out the ingredients for the Vanilla flavor: Filtered low-fat milk, cane sugar, honey, vanilla, lactase enzyme, sodium polyphosphate, carrageenan, Vitamin A Palmitate & Vitamin D3–That’s it!  No weird processed stuff that I don’t recognize.

Flavors

My favorite flavor is Chocolate- it tastes just like Hershey’s chocolate syrup…but better!

Vanilla

So go order some!

In checking out www.thekitchenofarunner.com yesterday, I got a craving for some pizza, and since I need to start carbing up for Sunday, I’m planning some crucial English Muffin pizzas tomorrow!  I’ll make to post them- anything you guys want to see on them?  And that’s it for today, but here are a few questions:

  1. Have your tried Honey Milk and what’s your favorite flavor?
  2. Whats you favorite kind of pizza?  AND
  3. From where?  Mine is Villa Bella back in Fairfax and John’s Pizzeria in NYC off Times Square!
