			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Life has many components—the main ones being family, friends, health, career, God, and your passions.  To me, the goal of life to be actively giving all of these the attention and time they need.  If you do that, then you are living your life to the fullest, at 100% percent of your potential.</p>
<p>I’ll be honest, I’m not.  I’d give myself 80%, at best. Whose fault is that?  Mine.  This post is not meant to be negative be any means, but rather a kick in the butt to me and anyone else who needs a little inspiration to get out and do more—to feel more alive!  Here’s where I’m struggling: Balance. Here was last week in numbers:</p>
<p><strong>Swim</strong>: 10,050 yards</p>
<p><strong>Bike</strong>: 8+ hours</p>
<p><strong>Run</strong>: About 33 miles (missed one run)</p>
<p><strong>Fun</strong> with friends: 0</p>
<p><strong>Church</strong>: 0</p>
<p><strong>Work</strong>: Plenty</p>
<p><strong>Sleep</strong>: Not nearly enough!</p>
<p>Here’s an example of my lame weekend—go to bed way too late, wake up, train, eat, go back to bed for a nap, train, eat, go to bed way too late.  Repeat on Sunday.  Let’s see, were friends mentioned in there? Was going out and doing something fun mentioned?  (And no, my trip to Whole Foods doesn’t count).</p>
<p>Granted, I’ve had a hard time making a lot of new friends here in Tampa and that has been frustrating (if you live here, get at me!), but in the same vein, my attempts at making friends haven’t been overly abundant.  This is probably because I prioritize working out on my weekends, which is FINE to do, but only if I don’t go back to bed after!  As for family, I had a great time when they visited last week, but I definitely bailed out of a lunch my mom had planned so that I could go eat food I was comfortable with and then take a nap before I worked out in the afternoon.</p>

<p>Sob story right?  Na, this is my pledge, my vow to get my life to 110%!  Why not 100%?  Because that’s where I could be, but I want to reach above that, go beyond that—I want to find a way to not only improve my life, but improve the environment I am in.  To make other people happier, more successful, and help them reach their goals.  The best part about this is the reward it brings me and motivation to stay committed to my goals.  This also means volunteering and going to church—I spend a lot of time praying, but that’s not the same as taking the time to give God the time he deserves.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So what’s my plan to make this happen?</p>
<p>Action plan for 1/23 – 1/30:</p>
<ul>
<li>Go to bed earlier.  Seriously, by 1 every night for this week</li>
<li>No wasting time drawing dinner out</li>
<li>Workout in the morning both days this weekend
<ul>
<li>Thus, due to going to bed earlier and working out in the morning…</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Do at least 1 fun thing this weekend during the afternoon or night
<ul>
<li>There is a huge Gaspirilla Festival this weekend… which has something to with pirates—apparently it’s a big deal</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Dominate my workouts
<ul>
<li>This includes eating right and including recovery after the workouts.</li>
</ul>
</li>

<p>Before I talk about anything else, I some cool news and a big announcement.</p>

<p>After a pretty successful 2011 triathlon racing season, I applied and have been offered a spot the Elite Triathlon Team of <a href="http://www.Wattieink.com">Wattie Ink</a> and will be Rockin&#8217; The W in 2012! I am really stoked for this, as the team only accepted 50 athletes from across the country and I feel really honored to be able to race as a member of this team.  This means I&#8217;ll be racing in the K-Swiss Wattie Ink uniform (check them out on the site) as well as be able to work with a bunch of great sponsors!</p>

<p>My second piece of triathlon news is that I will be coached by <a href="http://www.felipebastos.com">Felipe Bastos</a> this year, a triathlon world champion, many times over, from Brazil.  Not only does Felipe know triathlon more than I can ever imagine, he won&#8217;t take any my crap excuses and is going to push me this year. Already I&#8217;m beginning to focus on going to bed earlier!  This year is going to be focused on my training and building a strong base.  As Felipe has outlined, I will still have a very successful 2012, but this year is really meant to set me up for 2013 and later years. Triathlon is based on a multi-year planning and putting in the work early to be successful later.  Make sure to check out my race schedule for <a href="http://feerlessfood.com/2012-race-schedule/">2012 here</a>.</p>

<p>So I&#8217;m stoked for 2012!</p>
<p>In other news, since my family decided to put off a vacation to somewhere fun until March, when the waters get warm enough to swim in, they decided to come here instead which was pretty cool. They flew into Orlando and spent 2 days there before coming over to Tampa and seeing me.  I joined them on their first day and we went to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, which included going to Harry Potter World!  Haha, it was a lot of fun. Having grown up reading the books, it was cool to see.</p>

<p>My dad got my brother and I tickets to the Capitals game on Wednesday night and it was great to see them crush the Rangers (even though any other night, I would root for the Rangers).  We got there early enough to get some sweet shots of boys warming up!</p>

<p>It was also pretty simple to stick to my paleo diet style.  Not that this was hard, but Christmas dinner had amazing smoked turkey, roasted potatoes, and I made some amazing mashed butternut squash!  The whole week, I really tried to focus on following my meal plan and sticking to real foods- not protein powders etc.  However, I of course had a couple Christmas cookies, and my mom made homemade pizza one night&#8230; yes!</p>

Me?? Yes! Surprising, bacon fat is lower in fat and calories than Olive Oil. Wasn&#039;t as amazing as I would have hoped... and I didn&#039;t actually have any of the bacon- my bro did though</p></div>
<p>Of course, this was the same night they decided to take ever set of car keys to go off on various errands, leaving me with no transportation to get to the gym.  No worries- I’ll just set up the weights in the basement and do a hard metabolic circuit workout, right?  No- Apparently we sold all the weights.. great, what now?  Well milk jugs weight about 8.35 pounds&#8230; So I taped those securely shut and made a baller workout!  So this is a workout you can do if you’re ever in a pinch!</p>
<p>I started with a 7 mile run around the neighborhood and then did 11 rounds of the following circuit:</p>

<li>10 x Squats</li>
<li>10 x Rear back flys</li>
<li>10 x bicep curls</li>
<li>10 x shoulder press</li>

<p>Awesome workout!  Took a while to crank it out too!  Here are what the exercises look like- sorry for some of the blurry pictures and outfit&#8230; it was cold outside and the milk was cold!</p>
<p>Finally, I did a lot of the goals I wanted this week.  I ran outside and untimed a lot!  No idea any of the paces, but I didn’t care.  I also swam a number of times- granted, I never left myself enough time to do a full length workout after running and biking, but I did get 3-4 good sessions in this week.  And I tried out some new recipes!  I made a bunch of variations of pumpkin/ butternut squash pancakes (made with eggs, bananas, protein powder, and almonds!) Talk about healthy!</p>

<p>I find myself being on both sides of this answer depending on who the direction is coming from.  And I think this is the simplest factor in success of your goals and overcoming your fears and restraints.<br />
For years I’ve been struggling with eating right, exercising correctly for my goals, and devoting more time and brain power to thoughts about food and workouts than to the people who matter most in my life.</p>
<p>That’s where the skepticism occurs.  I can do research all day online about the best ways to eat or exercise, listen to different experts in the industry speak on health and nutrition, or have intense conversations with loved ones about how much more I could be getting out of life.  But if you don’t truly BUY IN to this, and are willing to Leap, you won’t meet your goals if you’re the one holding yourself back.</p>
<p>I’ve spent years meeting with different registered dietitians trying to find the right ones.  The majority I haven’t been able to make progress with.  Either they didn’t understand me and my goals, or they were completely wrong about nutrition and the sessions were spent with me educating them!  I’ve had a few who have been amazing—they knew what they were talking about, I believed them,  I respected them, and most importantly, I trusted them and looked up to them—almost like a boss or celebrity.</p>
<p>These are the ones where they told me to “Leap” and I respond “how high?”  Maybe you don’t have this problem with your goals.  I have no problem doing many things where I trust myself, but nutrition and exercise are the points in my life that I need the most guidance on.  Currently, I am putting my team together to help get my life in order.</p>
<ul>
<li>I have an amazing family who I trust and love and who I know will always be there for me</li>
<li>I finally have a doctor who understand the implications of what disordered eating and strenuous exercise can do to your health and is keeping tabs on me</li>
<li>I have a great triathlon coach and friend who is helping me with my plan and racing who I really trust, and I also have a number of close friends in the triathlon community who support me</li>
<li>Finally, I have a new Dietician who is incredible.  Not only does she know far more than I do, she GETS me and she has been through the same struggles I have.  She is also extremely responsive and I can tell she actually cares!  I’m sure you all know what I am talking about—when someone truly cares, their input makes a world of difference.  She was straight up with me and said “do exactly what I’ve told you to do—I will not get you fat, I promise!”</li>
</ul>
<p>So what do I think one the keys to success and change is?  Trust.  You must buy into the commitment you are making and trust those who are there to help you.  This goes for all goals—if you’re trying to lose weight or gain weight, you need to find a nutritionist you can trust.  Find a personal trainer who cares about you and wants to see you succeed and buys into that goal WITH you.  Finally, connect with your family and friends and get them on your team.</p>
<p>Thus, I’m ready to embrace this change heading into 2012.  But I’m not waiting until January 1<sup>st</sup> to start—instead I am already embracing next year and the ones to come after that.  After all, health and happiness aren’t annual  entities—they are life long.</p>
<p>My nutrition is improving too and I’m making the adjustments that my nutritionist and I have planned.  I’m eating much more fat from natural sources than I ever have in my life.  It really is so much more satiating and makes you feel so much better—grass fed meats, avocados, coconut butter and coconut oil, olive oil, nut butters, eggs, and raw organic full-fat dairy like whole milk, whole yogurt and cheese, and real butter.</p>

<p>I’m also focused on eating better around my workouts and during my workouts!  I made my first batch of paleo energy cookies last weekend and I’ll start posting some of those recipes.  The biggest limiter for me is sleep.  What do you mean 4 hours isn’t enough?  I know, I know… <a href="http://fuelasrx.blogspot.com/">Amy</a>, my nutritionist has also given me guidance on my strength training as well and her number 1 rule is, if less than 6 hours of sleep, not allowed to workout.  You won’t have the energy and your body will instead just secrete more Cortisol which can lower testosterone and other factors of increasing fat storage and hampering muscle gain.</p>
<p>My triathlon support team is also making progress.  I want to have my most successful year to date in 2012 and know I can improve when pairing a better diet and sleep with better training.  I looked at a few of my results this morning and I noticed that I have gotten faster, and raced longer, but not substantially from when I was a new triathlete to now.</p>
<p>So, 2012 goals—besides being healthier, happier, and a better friend and family member!</p>
<ul>
<li>Do a full muscle-up!  Check out the <a href="http://gymnasticswod.com/content/muscle-bar">video</a>—basically a full pull-up into a dip (Means I’ve got to get stronger!)</li>
<li>Break 3 hours at the Boston marathon and possibly at another marathon later in the year</li>
<li>Qualify for ITU Long Course Duathlon Worlds</li>
<li>Qualify for ITU Long Course Triathlon Worlds</li>
<li>PR in every distance race</li>
<li>Break 4:50:00 in a half ironman race</li>
<li>What else?  I know I’ve got more that aren’t so result oriented and I’ll add them as I think of them</li>
</ul>
<p>Speaking of change, I’m thinking about changing the name of my blog… the content <strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">wouldn’t</span></strong> change, but being that I write about more than just recipes, I’m considering the change.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m finally starting to pick up some structured training again.  I&#8217;m going to be racing a half marathon in Clermont this weekend, at actually The National Training Center, so that should be a lot of fun!  Goals for this race: I have no idea lol.  Just do it and don&#8217;t bail.  Also, goals for the week include going to the Lightning hockey game on Thursday as it&#8217;s the last one I&#8217;ll be in town for this year.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m headed back to DC for Christmas to see my family for Christmas next week.  So if you&#8217;re in town and want to get together to hang out, or do some training let me know!  Especially anyone who reads but doesn&#8217;t comment!</p>

<p>I gotta mention, one radio station here started playing Christmas music, like, the week BEFORE Thanksgiving.  Seriously? I love Christmas time, but that&#8217;s a little ridiculous.</p>
<p>So as the year comes towards an end, I&#8217;m determined to make 2012 the best year ever&#8230; but that means starting now! Don&#8217;t wait till January 1st to act on your &#8220;resolutions&#8221; and &#8220;goals&#8221;&#8211;do it now! I have gotten a lot of information about my healthy back lately, it&#8217;s not all too hot. But I have an amazing new nutritionist and she totally gets me&#8230; which is such a relief and inspiration. A huge point for me is being able to respect the nutritionist, and basically, look up to her, and know that, for once, she knows more than I do about nutrition and exercise.  She and I had a great meeting today, but I&#8217;ll wait for a later post to go into all the details about that and my health&#8230; Feel free to leave any questions.</p>
<p>But not, I realized I haven&#8217;t posted any good eats or recipes in a while! So I give you Slow Cooker beef stew! I made this last weekend and it&#8217;s so easy but so good!</p>
<p>Start by buying the highest quality ingredients:</p>

<p>Chop it into &#8220;stew size&#8221; pieces:</p>

<p>Then toss with flour (to make the gravy once you put it in the slow cooker) and brown in a skillet</p>

<p>Add all this to slow cooker and add enough water to cover.  I also added some tomato puree to add a little more flavor. Allow to cook on low for about 8 hours. At hour 7, add in whatever vegetables you want, like carrots, potatoes, and onions.  I had a bunch  carrots!</p>

<p>Recipe:</p>
<ul>
<li>2 lbs grass fed cubed steak</li>
<li>2-3 tablespoons flour (I used coconut flour)</li>
<li>3/4 cup tomato puree</li>
<li>Lots of fresh carrots (and vegetables as you&#8217;d like)</li>
</ul>
<p>This was one of my better slow cooker creations, and the best part is that it freezes really well so that I have it for weeks.</p>

<p>Now, lastly, I mentioned the fact that it&#8217;s the season <span style="text-decoration:underline;">to give</span>, right?  My friends at PowerBar were kind enough to send me some of their products to use in my training.  I love their gels, as I try to keep my diet as clean as possible at all time&#8211;in and out of training&#8211;and their gels are really good to compliment my nutrition.  They use a dual-carbohydrate source, so that way your body isn&#8217;t just relying on one source to replenish glycogen for energy and keep you going longer.</p>

(Well, not quite... someday)</p></div>
<p>Last Saturday I raced in the International Triathlon Union Long Course Triathlon World Championships, as a member of Team USA in Henderson, NV, just outside Las Vegas!  This was a race I qualified for last year and included the best athletes from all over the world.  It was a 4k swim (2.5 miles), 120k bike (75 miles), and a 30k run (18.6 miles).  This was the farthest distance I&#8217;ve ever raced, and to be honest, it&#8217;s been looming over my head for the last year.  I knew I would have to step up my level of swimming and get in some more long runs toward the end of this year.</p>
<p>Well, swimming was still tough to get in although I did get a coach to help my form.  As for my training, I was largely relying on some long workouts, but also a lot of intensity  to make up for the distance.  I also did a lot of racing in order to prepare myself as well. I raced all but a couple of weekends in October, as you know.</p>
<p>Additionally, I didn&#8217;t realize the magnitude of this course: the 120K bike ride had more than 9,700 feet climbing, and the 30K run boasted  an additional 2,000 ft elevation gain.  Y&#8217;all, I live in Florida&#8230; Not a lot of hills!  It also was not warm&#8211;highs of only about 60 degrees and then the wind chill on top of that.</p>

<p>The whole ITU experience was amazing though.  I&#8217;ll give you guys a quick run down without too much detail.  I arrived Wednesday morning, picked up the rental car, then drove to the packet pickup and race finish/expo location to get my packet and pick up my bike. I then loaded up on some food and headed to the host hotel which was also basically where the race began. I was a nice resort, but pretty far from the LV Strip.. (Probably a good thing)</p>

<p>That evening I ran in the gym then headed out for a few hills on the bike. Holy crap, I was thinking, it took me like 35 minutes to go 8 miles?  The roads are full of false flats (where you think it&#8217;s flat, but it&#8217;s really uphill) and crazy winds that almost blew me off the bike.  I was experiencing an incredible amount of mental stress at this point.  Even though I was going into this race with an attitude of &#8220;I just want to finish&#8221;, let&#8217;s be honest, that mentally DOES NOT exist within me.  If I&#8217;m going, I&#8217;m going hard.  I then went over to my the house of my Godfather, and had dinner their with their family. I hadn&#8217;t seen this guy in over 20 years, but it was like we were long time friends. He is my dad&#8217;s best friend and has a daughter my age.</p>
<p>Thursday I began by heading back to the race expo and swimming at the rec center there.  The facility was amazing and I swam in their outdoor 50m pool. After that, I headed back to the hotel and waited until the evening for the Team USA team picture. This was really cool to see all the athletes!  There were a lot, considering these were the best age groupers in the country from every age group.  There were also a number of pros there, Michael and Amanda Lovato, and the overall winner, Jordan Rapp.</p>

<p>After this, was the pasta dinner and pre-race briefing, as well as the Parade of Nations. I didn&#8217;t eat any pasta, as I don&#8217;t eat pasta, but also, at this point, I was going to eat anything I didn&#8217;t prepare myself. The course briefing didn&#8217;t console me at all and left me more nervous than ever&#8230; It was really cool to watch an athlete from every country in the room walk down the main aisle and hold up their country&#8217;s flag. It made me realize that this race was big time,</p>

<p>Friday, I did my pre-race workout, picked my dad up from the airport, dropped him at my Godfather&#8217;s, then went back and just chilled (and fretted) for the rest of the day. I was so incredibly excited to have my dad there.  I didn&#8217;t know he was coming until a few weeks before, but honestly, this meant the world to me.</p>
<p>The Race:</p>
<p>Saturday morning came early.  I had racked my bike the day before so I would take the shuttle to the swim and go from there.  But as I was in the lobby in the morning, I heard a lot of people talking and a lot of athletes huddled by country.  I asked another USA athlete what was going on and found out&#8230; the swim was OFF!! (Can you believe my luck?)  The water was about 60 degrees and the air temperature was under 40, then the wind chill on top of that. ITU rules say that the temperature discrepancy was too great and the health of the racers was at risk.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be perfectly honest, I don&#8217;t know that I would have finished the swim.  Not from a fitness standpoint, but that I would have frozen to death.  I&#8217;m not really kidding.</p>
<p>Thus, the race started in time trial fashion, with a racer leaving in order every 5 seconds. So I bundled up and we were off!</p>

<p>This bike was nuts! I&#8217;ve never seen so much gorgeous scenery, but never ridden such a brutal course. This was harder that Wildflower!  There were basically no flats, meaning I was crawling up hills at 10mph or flying down them at over 40mph. What made this hard as well, was how cold it could get in the shade when the wind was blowing. Also, I have trouble opening some of my nutrition due to the gloves I had on and had to rely on the gels on the course.  Ugh, Hammer gels are so gross.</p>

<p>After 5 hours on the bike, we came back into town to where the run started.  I guess this is how an Ironman works, but the amazing volunteers grabbed my bike from me and racked it while someone ahead grabbed my transition bag for me.  I spent like a year in transition, haha.  I don&#8217;t remember when I was doing, but I had to take off a number of layers.  I wore my Zensah compression socks for this whole race too, bike and run. I&#8217;ve never exercised in these before, but was wearing them for the warmth.  They actually felt pretty good, am I may incorporate this in racing more often.</p>
<p>The run consisted of 4 laps&#8230; half downhill and half uphill. I actually loved the fact that it was 4 loops- you knew exactly how far you had left to run, knew where the nutrition stops were, and had the crowds cheering you on the whole way.  The course was hard especially for me, someone who mostly runs on treadmills and barely ever runs hills lol.</p>

<p>2 hours and 19 minutes of running later, I crossed the finish line with a total time of 7:28:35</p>

<p>I couldn&#8217;t believe it when I crossed the line. I wasn&#8217;t as dead as I was imagining but I was done. Done done done. This was a year of stress just taken and flung from my shoulders.  Literally, I ran to my dad and gave him a huge hug as I fought back tears.  This was a pretty emotional feeling for me.</p>
<p>I finished 37th of 45 in my age group and in the bottom 2/3 overall.  Like I said though, I&#8217;m ok with this, considering these were the best athletes in the world.  It also gave me a lot of confidence in my training and how much BETTER I could be with better sleep, nutrition, and training.  My bike time was at the bottom of the results as well, but my run was in the top 13% which I was pleased with and I was able to average a 7:29 min/mile pace for the entire run.</p>
<p>So after this, I went back to my hotel and crashed right? Ha, that&#8217;s not how the Feerick men roll.  My dad and drove to The Strip and checked in at our new hotel at&#8230;</p>

<p>We started by hitting the buffet at the Bellagio and it was awesome.  For once, I let myself relax a little bit and enjoy food.  The few drinks I had in me helped too ; ) considering I rarely ever drink so they did a quick number.  Among all the other lean meats and fruit, I let myself have a little piece of pizza, some mashed sweet potatoes which I didn&#8217;t know the ingredients of, and sampled a couple of different desserts!  The little carrot cake bite thing I had was amazing!</p>
<p>Then we went to down to New York New York and went to the Coyote Ugly bar.  Won&#8217;t lie, this was fun with my dad. After that, the casino beckoned.  We didn&#8217;t make any money in the slot machines and I was too tired to think straight enough for any of the card tables.  We ended up breaking even on Roulette which was a lot of fun.</p>
<p>Back at the hotel, we crashed hard, and 4 hours later, I was back up and on a place back east to Florida.</p>
<p>What a trip!  The race was amazing and getting to ball out in Vegas with my dad? Pretty unforgettable.  My birthday was on Tuesday, so the whole thing was an early birthday present!</p>
<p>On Monday, my mom actually came to see me in Tampa and finally unpack my apartment and move me in&#8230; there&#8217;s so much room now!  It was fun to spend my birthday with her- she made dinner and made me blow out candles on my &#8220;cake&#8221;</p>

<p>Luckily she didn&#8217;t make me eat it- it was one of the dryest, flavorless cupcakes ever, and we both agreed on that.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s all- I&#8217;m done, I&#8217;m out!  I&#8217;m going to try and start blogging shorter and more frequently, so look forward to that!</p>
<p>So my coach won&#8217;t let me run a marathon before the end of this year&#8230; but I did find a 30k trail run this weekend that I am stoked for!</p>
