Rants and Raves

I know I haven’t done a written post in a while, but that’s because I’ve been putting together some podcasts that I hope you all can listen to!

First I want to talk about a few things that have been awesome lately… and then a couple rants I have- one being really important.

So- things I’m loving:

  • As I’ve said before, that my computer can read articles to me–but this time, the WAY it reads some words. My favorite is “Paleo”, which it reads “Pahh-lee-oh”.  Also, if anyones types “xoxo” it reads it as “Sockza”  Haha, explain that to me.  And just to let you know, I imagine you all in real life sounding like a computer robot since I have the computer speak your blog posts lol.
  • Brussell Sprouts.  Really! I love vegetables and they are a new way to incorporate more variety.
  • Full fat coconut milk: Check it out- here I mixed it with spaghetti squash and cinnamon… so bomb:

  • The fact that I still got some high-intensity workouts while I was traveling to Nashville last week. Also met up with my man JC there, who owns www.JCDfitness.com.

  • My swims the week before last–I swam over 15,000yds! Hoping to repeat that this week
  • I signed up for 2 races next month- The Gasparilla half marathon on March 4th and the Ocala HITS Half Ironman triathlon on March 25th!  I really need these to test my readiness for Boston so I’m really looking forward to it!  Not thrilled that I have to race against my coach though… but at least he’s not in my age group!
  • FEARLESS NUTRITION RADIO! The podcast I have started with a friend of mine.  We did our bios in the first episode and had an interview with expert Sean Croxton last week.  Pretty cool that we’ve been able to line up some VERY acclaimed and esteemed guests to interview!
  • I ate bacon.. no really!  For the first in my life and all on my own!  Here I made bacon wrapped chicken:

  • I went to Disney last weekend and rode the Rock n’ Roll coaster for the first time… fun picture:

Now a couple rants!

  • First, I don’t know if any of you have listened to the podcasts!  We haven’t had many questions come on or any comments.  These take a lot to work and I really want to bring you guys a lot of benefit!  Please let me know if you have any questions that we can answer and guests you’d like to see.  I’ve got nutritionists, pro athletes, and health gurus lined up and I really want to keep this up!
  • Next- I was watching the show “Fat Chef” on Food Network.  I love Food Network and I appreciate what they are doing but it just highlights again to me how many (I didn’t say all!) “Registered Dietitians” really have no idea what they are doing.  The nutritionist wanted to put a 340 pound woman on an 1,800 calorie diet. Clearly she had no idea about the actual laws of thermogenisis where that woman’s metabolism is actually going to be HIGHER than an average-weight person. Not to mention she’s probably burns twice as many calories as the average person as rest due to the fact of supporting and moving all that weight around and the calories needed to maintain it. The right way to do this is to lower calories below maintenance, but this is still going to be a significant amount of calories which will slowly be tapered down as the woman’s weight decreases proportionately.  Sorry, but that just drives me crazy, same with the Biggest Loser, that these “Celebrity dietitians” don’t know things such as this.  Sorry.

Ok, if you read one, read this one.  My dad sent me an email last week asking if the changes I had made in my life lately were truly benefitting me.  And he was asking completely earnestly.  I took this back to my nutritionist as she has been helping me with a lot of things- prioritizing nutrition, sleep, and all that etc. Basically, she called me out real hard.  I had to be honest with myself and my dad and to her!  Have I done any of the plan that I’ve time, money, and focus on doing?  NO!  Not really.  Yeah, I’ve changed my diet for the better, but what good is that if I am not sleeping enough and not making the lifestyle changes that will allow this better, healthier paleo diet to actually work!

How can I expect to increase my testosterone, beat the iron deficiency that has caused me to become anemic, and to release my fears and comforts with foods if I don’t take the first steps to get me there? So basically, I need to harden the fuck up and step it up.  If I can focus so hard on the other things in my life like working out and eating, why can’t I put the remaining piece of the puzzle into place? I am committing to do (I’m sure you’re laughing and saying “gee Chuck, you’ve only said that a MILLION times!”) but now, the harsh reality that my nutritionist has brought to light has got me focused.

Are you at 110%?

Life has many components—the main ones being family, friends, health, career, God, and your passions.  To me, the goal of life to be actively giving all of these the attention and time they need.  If you do that, then you are living your life to the fullest, at 100% percent of your potential.

I’ll be honest, I’m not.  I’d give myself 80%, at best. Whose fault is that?  Mine.  This post is not meant to be negative be any means, but rather a kick in the butt to me and anyone else who needs a little inspiration to get out and do more—to feel more alive!  Here’s where I’m struggling: Balance. Here was last week in numbers:

Swim: 10,050 yards

Bike: 8+ hours

Run: About 33 miles (missed one run)

Fun with friends: 0

Church: 0

Work: Plenty

Sleep: Not nearly enough!

Here’s an example of my lame weekend—go to bed way too late, wake up, train, eat, go back to bed for a nap, train, eat, go to bed way too late.  Repeat on Sunday.  Let’s see, were friends mentioned in there? Was going out and doing something fun mentioned?  (And no, my trip to Whole Foods doesn’t count).

Granted, I’ve had a hard time making a lot of new friends here in Tampa and that has been frustrating (if you live here, get at me!), but in the same vein, my attempts at making friends haven’t been overly abundant.  This is probably because I prioritize working out on my weekends, which is FINE to do, but only if I don’t go back to bed after!  As for family, I had a great time when they visited last week, but I definitely bailed out of a lunch my mom had planned so that I could go eat food I was comfortable with and then take a nap before I worked out in the afternoon.

Sob story right?  Na, this is my pledge, my vow to get my life to 110%!  Why not 100%?  Because that’s where I could be, but I want to reach above that, go beyond that—I want to find a way to not only improve my life, but improve the environment I am in.  To make other people happier, more successful, and help them reach their goals.  The best part about this is the reward it brings me and motivation to stay committed to my goals.  This also means volunteering and going to church—I spend a lot of time praying, but that’s not the same as taking the time to give God the time he deserves.

 

So what’s my plan to make this happen?

Action plan for 1/23 – 1/30:

  • Go to bed earlier.  Seriously, by 1 every night for this week
  • No wasting time drawing dinner out
  • Workout in the morning both days this weekend
    • Thus, due to going to bed earlier and working out in the morning…
  • Do at least 1 fun thing this weekend during the afternoon or night
    • There is a huge Gaspirilla Festival this weekend… which has something to with pirates—apparently it’s a big deal
  • Dominate my workouts
    • This includes eating right and including recovery after the workouts.

 

So Keep me honest!  We’ll review next week!

Last thing is that I’m going to be starting a podcast with a friend of mine, Max.  This is going to legit—we will be discussing health, nutrition, training, and interviewing some really cool (and famous) people.  We’ll also be answering any questions you have, so if you start to develop some, let me know and we’ll answer them each week!  Look for the first show to come out later this week where Max and I introduce ourselves a bit and discuss the purpose of the show!

Let’s rock it!

2012 is off to a fast start and it’s not messing around!  My life has been plenty busy, and while fun, I’m still trying to keep my head above water… and keep my head held high at the same time.  Tampa is good, although it actually got a bit cold here for past couple days, I mean, the high was only in like the 60s!  I don’t know how you guys survive up north!

Before I talk about anything else, I some cool news and a big announcement.

After a pretty successful 2011 triathlon racing season, I applied and have been offered a spot the Elite Triathlon Team of Wattie Ink and will be Rockin’ The W in 2012! I am really stoked for this, as the team only accepted 50 athletes from across the country and I feel really honored to be able to race as a member of this team.  This means I’ll be racing in the K-Swiss Wattie Ink uniform (check them out on the site) as well as be able to work with a bunch of great sponsors!

My second piece of triathlon news is that I will be coached by Felipe Bastos this year, a triathlon world champion, many times over, from Brazil.  Not only does Felipe know triathlon more than I can ever imagine, he won’t take any my crap excuses and is going to push me this year. Already I’m beginning to focus on going to bed earlier!  This year is going to be focused on my training and building a strong base.  As Felipe has outlined, I will still have a very successful 2012, but this year is really meant to set me up for 2013 and later years. Triathlon is based on a multi-year planning and putting in the work early to be successful later.  Make sure to check out my race schedule for 2012 here.

In other news, since my family decided to put off a vacation to somewhere fun until March, when the waters get warm enough to swim in, they decided to come here instead which was pretty cool. They flew into Orlando and spent 2 days there before coming over to Tampa and seeing me.  I joined them on their first day and we went to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, which included going to Harry Potter World!  Haha, it was a lot of fun. Having grown up reading the books, it was cool to see.

If you don’t know who you are…

…How can your dreams come true?

My triathlon season is 5 days away from kicking way back up into high-gear.  On Sunday I’ll be in DC racing the Nations Tri- a pretty big and competitive Olympic distance race. I am feeling very confident about myself and firmly believe that what you believe is what you will make happen.  The opposition is going to be fierce so I will take it for what it is, however, after doing some research lately, I’m coming to believe that our minds are our only limiters and that believing in yourself, you can push through any pain that you believe limits you!  After this race, I have a week off before Ironman 70.3 Augusta, my third half ironman of the season.

But lately I’ve been somewhat questioning myself- not questioning my ability, but questioning WHO I am racing for.  Recently, it has seemed that I am not grinding through hard workouts solely for myself, but so that I can work harder, work more, and live up to the expectations of the people who follow me.  Whether it be coworkers, friends, my family, and even all the other triathlete I interact with on Twitter… What if they are doing more that me, what if they rode their bikes 60 miles and I only rode 50? Well what F**king if?!  If I do “less” than another person, does that make me a worse athlete?  Does it mean that I then need to eat way less to make up for that?  I’ll let you decide on what you think the answer is…

Who cares?  I need to race/train/LIVE for me, not anyone else. But this being said, let me train, race, and eat because of them, not for them. It is motivation to see the success of others- people who have turned from non-athletes to Ironmen, of for people who cannot do what I do as much as they’d like to. Or even for those who have NO desire to do anything I do–I know my mom is absolutely no way wants to do a half-Ironman, but I do know that she is proud to watch me race in HEALTHY, competitive, properly nourished fashion.

So who am I? I’m someone who races for the love and passion of it all- not to be “better” than anyone else, or, God forbid, for an excuse to all myself to eat.

Go time

What really has me excited and nervous though, is my impending ITU Long Course Championships triathlon in Las Vegas in November.  This race, as I’ve mentioned, is on the world stage and is going to require a lot of hard work from me starting… well a month a go, ha. I got my registration notice in my e-mail today and have to sign up by the end of the week (gulp!)  The race is like a 3/4 ironman so it will be the longest race I’ve done to date.  But you know what?  Who knows when I will get this chance to be part of Team USA again?  It will be hot, hilly, windy, and unforgiving… But I’ll finish… and I’ll finish strong.

I missed all the rides I had planed this weekend, but was really proud of myself for getting out and putting in work on my own.  Sunday I did a 4.5 mile run, 25.5 miles bike, 3.2 mile run, 60 minutes on the spin bike (20 miles), and another 1.6 mile run. Then Monday, I used the same format, but made the outdoor ride 10 miles longer.  Dude, the wind was BRUTAL this weekend!  This was all on the old Felt too, as the my baby, my B12, is en route to DC!

I also know its been forever since I’ve blogged!  Here’s a quick recap of my why and whats been going on:

First I was in New York with the family for a day (and got to meet up with Katelyn!)

After that, the family and I went to a lake where I got to spend another day with them before jetting off the Virginia Beach for work

After spending the week in Virginia Beach, it was back to Tampa for a weekend or so. Got some good training in and some awesome homemade grub.  I’ve basically just been using coconut oil to bake butternut or sweet potatoes fries… um like every night. So healthy, and if it tastes good, why not, right?? I have like 30 different variations now, haha, so just ask if you want to know what they are.

Then, later that week, I had to fly to Atlanta for work for a couple nights.  Finally I’m home, but I’m flying to DC Friday morning for the race! And, yay, I get to fly home just hours after the race to be back at work Monday… whoop whoop!

20 things that make life awesome and WIATFMBW

I hope by now you’ve all had a chance to check me and Lori’s recipes and left comments on our posts!  I can’t get any pictures, but will have a video up soon.  Can anyone tell me how to post a video I record using iMovie on my mac??
Anyways, this has been a long week of travel but I got to see my family and also go back to Virginia Beach for some job training.  Although, I’ve had the absolute worst experiences, I’m going to stay positive.
Speaking of positivity, here are 20 little things that occurred to me that make like awesome:
  1. All of you.  Thank you for everyone’s comments on my last post and the support you gave to me.  It’s really helping me get through a little bit of a rough patch right now.
  2. Summer and sunshine—I am loving Florida right now, but didn’t realize how much so until 2 realizations.  First, it’s been rainy and gross the past 2 days and I’ve hated every minute of it.  Second, I realized that when I am doing the Disney Half Marathon in October, it will still be hot!
  3. Sweet potatoes—they’re just so versatile and I can fit them into any meal.  Either with coconut oil, in my almond butter fry recipe, topped with butter, almond butter, or with cheddar cheese (and possibly a little maple syrup to get the maple cheddar flavor).  And always cinnamon
  4. Butternut squash—See “Sweet Potato”
  5. Riding bikes outside—There’s nothing better than hitting the road and riding in the sun after a long day, especially a long ride on the weekend with other people who will push you
  6. The pool at my apartment building—I swear its longer than an Olympic size pool… which either makes me feel like I’m doing more work or that I’m really slow, ha
  7. My little brother—the only person who can relate when I call him at 1 o’clock in the morning to tell him about a story on the news with a headline that read “Library rape benefit”.  No thanks, I’ll take my library membership without the rape, thank you.  What it should have said was “Benefit function held at the library to raise money to fight against rape.”  Syntax people.
  8. Food Network—come on now, it’s only channel you can put on for background noise in the evening and it will always entertain… although does anyone else think “Chopped” is on like all the time now?
  9. People who go out of their way to explore real research behind the science of nutrition and how we should be eating—I’m always doing research, hence why I am trying a paleo diet right now, and become more enlightened everyday from the different viewpoints I read and truths that are exposed.
  10. Trying new recipes that I make up AND being successful at them—enough said
  11. Discovering new awesome blogs—you know when you Google something and actually find a recipe or an idea that sparks you?  Or your find another local triathlete who lives nearby and actually end up training with them?
  12. Racing triathlons—nothing beats it.  Training can suck sometimes, but nothing beats racing
  13. My 4Runner—my bike fits inside it no problem
  14. Twitter, and everyone I’ve met through it—it’s amazing the amount of support I’ve found through Twitter and blogging.  It’s a pretty cool phenomenon
  15. Crunchy almond butter—yeah bro,  Don’t bring the smooth crap up in here
  16. People who have changed my life, yet I have never met—that’s most of you.  Thank you, and I pray that one day I can meet and thank you.
  17. Other who are battling and winning against an eating disorder who are there for me to give advice but also ask for and listen to advice
  18. My eating disorder–not for the disease itself, but for all the strength and learning about myself it has allowed me to see.
  19. The “Favorite” button on Twitter–I read through Twitter all day and every time I see an interesting article or link, I “Favorite” it from my phone, then go back and read them all on my computer as I eat dinner in the evening.
  20. Broccoli–and did I mention Ketchup??  (Need to break that obsession lol)

Also, here is my first ever WIATFMBW! That stands for “What I Ate To Fuel My Body (last) Wednesday!”  Wanna get faster, better, and healthier?  You have to got to eat well and enough to fuel your exercise AND fuel your recovery!
