ITU Long Course Triathlon World Championships

Spinning the wheels, turning the legs, and rolling the dice!

On the Podium! (Well, not quite... someday)

Last Saturday I raced in the International Triathlon Union Long Course Triathlon World Championships, as a member of Team USA in Henderson, NV, just outside Las Vegas!  This was a race I qualified for last year and included the best athletes from all over the world.  It was a 4k swim (2.5 miles), 120k bike (75 miles), and a 30k run (18.6 miles).  This was the farthest distance I’ve ever raced, and to be honest, it’s been looming over my head for the last year.  I knew I would have to step up my level of swimming and get in some more long runs toward the end of this year.

Well, swimming was still tough to get in although I did get a coach to help my form.  As for my training, I was largely relying on some long workouts, but also a lot of intensity  to make up for the distance.  I also did a lot of racing in order to prepare myself as well. I raced all but a couple of weekends in October, as you know.

Additionally, I didn’t realize the magnitude of this course: the 120K bike ride had more than 9,700 feet climbing, and the 30K run boasted  an additional 2,000 ft elevation gain.  Y’all, I live in Florida… Not a lot of hills!  It also was not warm–highs of only about 60 degrees and then the wind chill on top of that.

The whole ITU experience was amazing though.  I’ll give you guys a quick run down without too much detail.  I arrived Wednesday morning, picked up the rental car, then drove to the packet pickup and race finish/expo location to get my packet and pick up my bike. I then loaded up on some food and headed to the host hotel which was also basically where the race began. I was a nice resort, but pretty far from the LV Strip.. (Probably a good thing)

Host Resort

That evening I ran in the gym then headed out for a few hills on the bike. Holy crap, I was thinking, it took me like 35 minutes to go 8 miles?  The roads are full of false flats (where you think it’s flat, but it’s really uphill) and crazy winds that almost blew me off the bike.  I was experiencing an incredible amount of mental stress at this point.  Even though I was going into this race with an attitude of “I just want to finish”, let’s be honest, that mentally DOES NOT exist within me.  If I’m going, I’m going hard.  I then went over to my the house of my Godfather, and had dinner their with their family. I hadn’t seen this guy in over 20 years, but it was like we were long time friends. He is my dad’s best friend and has a daughter my age.

Thursday I began by heading back to the race expo and swimming at the rec center there.  The facility was amazing and I swam in their outdoor 50m pool. After that, I headed back to the hotel and waited until the evening for the Team USA team picture. This was really cool to see all the athletes!  There were a lot, considering these were the best age groupers in the country from every age group.  There were also a number of pros there, Michael and Amanda Lovato, and the overall winner, Jordan Rapp.

This picture only shows about 1/3 of the team

I think we were supposed to wear Khakis?

After this, was the pasta dinner and pre-race briefing, as well as the Parade of Nations. I didn’t eat any pasta, as I don’t eat pasta, but also, at this point, I was going to eat anything I didn’t prepare myself. The course briefing didn’t console me at all and left me more nervous than ever… It was really cool to watch an athlete from every country in the room walk down the main aisle and hold up their country’s flag. It made me realize that this race was big time,

The banquet

Friday, I did my pre-race workout, picked my dad up from the airport, dropped him at my Godfather’s, then went back and just chilled (and fretted) for the rest of the day. I was so incredibly excited to have my dad there.  I didn’t know he was coming until a few weeks before, but honestly, this meant the world to me.

The Race:

Saturday morning came early.  I had racked my bike the day before so I would take the shuttle to the swim and go from there.  But as I was in the lobby in the morning, I heard a lot of people talking and a lot of athletes huddled by country.  I asked another USA athlete what was going on and found out… the swim was OFF!! (Can you believe my luck?)  The water was about 60 degrees and the air temperature was under 40, then the wind chill on top of that. ITU rules say that the temperature discrepancy was too great and the health of the racers was at risk.

I’ll be perfectly honest, I don’t know that I would have finished the swim.  Not from a fitness standpoint, but that I would have frozen to death.  I’m not really kidding.

Thus, the race started in time trial fashion, with a racer leaving in order every 5 seconds. So I bundled up and we were off!

Transition area

And this was just awesome! I really hope that whoever this was ate the Twinkies during the race

Race start

This bike was nuts! I’ve never seen so much gorgeous scenery, but never ridden such a brutal course. This was harder that Wildflower!  There were basically no flats, meaning I was crawling up hills at 10mph or flying down them at over 40mph. What made this hard as well, was how cold it could get in the shade when the wind was blowing. Also, I have trouble opening some of my nutrition due to the gloves I had on and had to rely on the gels on the course.  Ugh, Hammer gels are so gross.

Coming back into town

After 5 hours on the bike, we came back into town to where the run started.  I guess this is how an Ironman works, but the amazing volunteers grabbed my bike from me and racked it while someone ahead grabbed my transition bag for me.  I spent like a year in transition, haha.  I don’t remember when I was doing, but I had to take off a number of layers.  I wore my Zensah compression socks for this whole race too, bike and run. I’ve never exercised in these before, but was wearing them for the warmth.  They actually felt pretty good, am I may incorporate this in racing more often.

The run consisted of 4 laps… half downhill and half uphill. I actually loved the fact that it was 4 loops- you knew exactly how far you had left to run, knew where the nutrition stops were, and had the crowds cheering you on the whole way.  The course was hard especially for me, someone who mostly runs on treadmills and barely ever runs hills lol.

Notice something wrong about my race bib?

I took of the Under Armor after I began to warm up on the second lap

Passing people

2 hours and 19 minutes of running later, I crossed the finish line with a total time of 7:28:35

Over

I couldn’t believe it when I crossed the line. I wasn’t as dead as I was imagining but I was done. Done done done. This was a year of stress just taken and flung from my shoulders.  Literally, I ran to my dad and gave him a huge hug as I fought back tears.  This was a pretty emotional feeling for me.

I finished 37th of 45 in my age group and in the bottom 2/3 overall.  Like I said though, I’m ok with this, considering these were the best athletes in the world.  It also gave me a lot of confidence in my training and how much BETTER I could be with better sleep, nutrition, and training.  My bike time was at the bottom of the results as well, but my run was in the top 13% which I was pleased with and I was able to average a 7:29 min/mile pace for the entire run.

So after this, I went back to my hotel and crashed right? Ha, that’s not how the Feerick men roll.  My dad and drove to The Strip and checked in at our new hotel at…

Caesar's Palace

…Caesar’s Palace!  We changed clothes and headed out!

One night- lets go!

We started by hitting the buffet at the Bellagio and it was awesome.  For once, I let myself relax a little bit and enjoy food.  The few drinks I had in me helped too ; ) considering I rarely ever drink so they did a quick number.  Among all the other lean meats and fruit, I let myself have a little piece of pizza, some mashed sweet potatoes which I didn’t know the ingredients of, and sampled a couple of different desserts!  The little carrot cake bite thing I had was amazing!

Then we went to down to New York New York and went to the Coyote Ugly bar.  Won’t lie, this was fun with my dad. After that, the casino beckoned.  We didn’t make any money in the slot machines and I was too tired to think straight enough for any of the card tables.  We ended up breaking even on Roulette which was a lot of fun.

Back at the hotel, we crashed hard, and 4 hours later, I was back up and on a place back east to Florida.

What a trip!  The race was amazing and getting to ball out in Vegas with my dad? Pretty unforgettable.  My birthday was on Tuesday, so the whole thing was an early birthday present!

On Monday, my mom actually came to see me in Tampa and finally unpack my apartment and move me in… there’s so much room now!  It was fun to spend my birthday with her- she made dinner and made me blow out candles on my “cake”

Like how my races are still on? The damn Tri Tats won't come off!

Luckily she didn’t make me eat it- it was one of the dryest, flavorless cupcakes ever, and we both agreed on that.

That’s all- I’m done, I’m out!  I’m going to try and start blogging shorter and more frequently, so look forward to that!

So my coach won’t let me run a marathon before the end of this year… but I did find a 30k trail run this weekend that I am stoked for!

  1. What’s the most meaningful, emotional, or longest race you’ve ever done?
  2. Have you been to Vegas? Or, do you remember ; )?
  3. Any races coming up?
Have a great week!

Touch and Go

I’ve officially been in Florida for over a full week now!  The longest I’ve been in one place for the past month.  That being said, I am flying to Nashville tomorrow for work for a few days and come back on Saturday. Anyone live in Nashville and want to meet up Friday night?  Or can recommend any fun things to do?  I’ve been having some fun here in Tampa too this first week and hopefully this weekend will be checking out a place called “Boing”—a huge warehouse filled with trampolines!

I’m also finally getting a race schedule put together: it’s looking like-

  • July 10th: Moss Park Triathlon Festival—Olympic (might do the Sprint on Saturday too?)
  • July 23rd: Siesta Key Beach triathlon—Olympic
  • August 21st: Fall Triathlon Festival—Olympic
  • September 11th: The Nations Tri (in DC)—Olympic
  • September 18th: Mango Olympic Triathlon (MAYBE)
  • September 25th: Ironman 70.3 Augusta
  • October 1st: Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon
  • October 9th: South Carolina Half Rev—Half Ironman (Probably)
  • October 15th: Men’s Health Urbanthlon Chicago
  • November 5th: ITU Long Course Worlds (Las Vegas)
  • Anyone up for a December marathon?  Somewhere warm!

Wow, that list is a lot longer than I thought!  Granted these are all tentative, especially back to back ones.  But I needed to get them all written down.

Training has been in spurts… it kind of goes like: 2 days of epic workouts followed by painful day of training as the previous 2 catch up with me ha.  This will get better once I can finally get settled any find people to ride and train with.  I did put in 40+ miles running this past week as well as some specific bike workouts and a little bit of swimming.  I’ve been hitting the pool in my apartment building (which is maybe like 23 meters?) for quick, short hard swims before work.  My office also has a “gym” so I’ve gotten in a few lifting sessions at lunch.

Oh!  And guess what—I actually ran IN THE MORNING one day last week and will have to do it again before my flight tomorrow morning.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about nutrition lately and a lot of research.  The “speech” function of my Mac is amazing and allows me to get through a lot more information since it reads it to me (#awesome) (yes, I just used a Twitter hashtag).  I’ve been researching the paleo diet a lot lately, and while I don’t think I will do it, I’ve been finding incredible information of the importance of eating fats—real fats like grass-fed red meat, egg yolks, butter, full fat dairy (cheese, milk, yogurt), and healthy oils such as olive oil and coconut oil.

This being said, I don’t know that a “diet” is the answer, but rather a cleaner way of living is the best option.  I don’t want to limit myself to giving up entirely certain foods—I’ve been there and don’t want to start rekindling any of my eating disorder behaviors; I still deal with enough of those as it is and it makes life hard enough.

If there are any nutrition topics you want to know more about or would like to see me write some post about, let me know and I will!   Send me any questions as well… and just leave a comment and let me know you’re here!

Katelyn Tweeted an article the other day about schools banning flavored milk in schools.  I have mixed opinions on this.  On one hand, yes its good, decrease the added sugars and unnecessary calories these kids are consuming.  However, by flavoring milk, nothing is being taken AWAY from the milk—all the vitamins, proteins, and minerals are all still there.  But by taking away the milk, won’t kids just be more likely to bring in soda or Gatorade and just find replacements for the milk?  Why not stop serving corn dogs and French fries first before taking away the milk?

What are your thoughts?

And finally, for some fun, here are just a bunch of random pictures from the past couple weeks!

Another attempt at overnight oats

Sign in the stairwell at my office.. really? Like I didn't know there were 9 floors that came before the 10th?

My new parking spot. Worst. Spot. Ever.

Delicious coconut vanilla oatmeal bar

Avocado yogurt cream sauce... sooo good!

Chocolate banana Coffee Honeymilk overnight oats!

Mmmm eggs with mushrooms, onions, and plenty of crushed red peppers (like I said, trying to eat more whole eggs)

I had some leftover broccoli and chicken from dinner so I threw it in a bowl and added some eggs and baked it for lunch

The 2 oddest shaped foods I've ever bought... the cashier laughed at me. The little one is a Jimaca? Not good

Thanks for reading guys and I hope you weeks are off to great starts!  This blog is going to get revamped pretty soon so look for some really big changes!

  1. Best thing you ate or thing you did this week?
  2. Thoughts on flavored milk in schools?  And nutrition or triathlon questions you have for me?

Countdown…. nolhtairt

Hey guys!  It’s been a while, I know- I’ve been busy, sort of, but things are going pretty well!  Work has finally picked up a bit  and I was also able to go out with this weekend which was a lot of fun.  A buddy and I went to the Cincinnati Cyclones hockey game!  It was pretty awesome, plus, they won.  I’m also going to the University of Cincinnati Basketball game tomorrow versus Louisville.  Should be beast!

Hockey!

But where to really begin… Well first, triathlon season is almost upon us!  Maybe not in Ohio, but in other, warmer, climates!  In order to prepare for this I’ve signed up for a few local races here.  I’m doing the Cincinnati Heart 1/2 Marathon on March 20th, and then the Lexington Half Marathon in Kentucky the weekend after.  I’m also planning to sign up for distance trail races which I LOVE!  So I need to start making my workouts more consistent and my recovery better.  This being said, I finally hit 40 miles for the week last week!  Might be able to do it again this week, but we’ll see:

Saturday I ran 11.3 miles plus cross training and swimming.  Then Sunday was another 8.3 mile run plus spinning and then lifting (finally!).  Both of these runs were at about 6:30 pace, and Sunday included 5 mile-repeats at about 6:20-6:15 pace.  Yesterday I planned to run again but my legs were saying, eh not so much- so I got another great lift, some good elliptical work, and then a great spin class.  However, hitting the bed at 3:30 and getting up at 7:30 meant today I had NO energy and just came home and crashed.  But I had a good dinner (recipe to come later this week…)

Speaking of some good eats, Katie from Naturally Nutty sent me this amazing package:

Naturally Nutty nut butters!

The package included Cinnamon Vanilla Almond Butter, Butter Toffee Peanut butter, Mocha Peanut Butter, and White Chocolate Coconut peanut butter. They all taste great and are all natural, plus 5% goes back to charity from each jar sold.  Honestly, I’ve been tempted to just bring the Cinnamon Vanilla with me to work to just leave open on my desk so I can smell it all day.

In other eats, here are some recipes I’ve been trying.  First was cocoa dusted sweet potatoes!

Ingredients

Before going in the oven

After being baked!

I coated them in coconut oil and then just sprinkled cocoa powder on them.  They tasted pretty good, but the chocolate was a bit over-bearing since I just sort of dumped it on.  I think this could be really good, however, I need to rub the sweet potatoes with the cocoa and get it more evenly spread.

This week I also finally busted out that grill I bought at the DC Food Expo!  The Grill It stove top grill

Just set it on top of your stove burner

You put half a cup of liquid in the pan and the steaming effect creates a grill!  I had to use water, but a nice beer would have added some nice flavor!  Anyways, I had a couple gorgeous and lean individual Eye of Round steak which I grilled up for some fajitas

Eye of Round-- so lean

Delicious

The steak was a tad bit over-cooked so I’ll know next time not do grill it quite so long.

Stayed tuned because I’ve got a couple new recipes coming soon!

The problem with going to long between posts is that I don’t have the time to go really deeply into any subject.  However, I just wrote an article that should be up at www.Honeymilk.com in the next week or so about the importance of plyometrics and changing directions for endurance athletes so be sure to check that out!

I’ll post again soon though with some thoughts I have on “off days”.  Until then, I am going to continue with my goals from last week.  I don’t know that I ever said it, but I’ve been trying to do at least one new ab exercise everyday workout.  I have a great circuit already, but in order to affect change, you’ve got to keep your body guessing and not letting it adapt!  I’m also trying to get more sleep!!  And finally, I want to hit 40 miles again this week!

Have a great week guys- eat something good, respect yourself, and work hard at whatever it is your are passionate about!

  1. Have you created or reinvented any new recipes lately?
  2. What did you do for Valentine’s day?

Dinosaur B-Brady-Q

I am loving Cincinnati so far.  Granted, I haven’t done much, but I took on some big challenges and steps today and, your know what?  I feel great and strong!  I didn’t hit the complete goals set between my nutritionist and I, but I challenged myself to include more “goodness” in my diet today and I feel stronger for it!  I also checked out the University of Cincinnati Rec Center today… and tore it up!  It’s an awesome facility with weights, cardio, and an awesome pool so I can swim every day!  Today I did:

  • 10.07 miles in 1:06:00, 6:33 min/mile
  • 30 minutes hard intervals on the elliptical
  • 25 minutes intervals on the bike
  • Burpees, push ups, and abs

Ate well before this workout and I think it helped big time!  I also ate well when I got home and included proper post workout nutrition.  Here the recipe I started my day with–some HoneyMilk Oatmeal!

  • 8 oz. Honey Flavor HoneyMilk
  • 3/4 cup dry oats
  • 1 chopped banana
  • 1-2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • Cinnamon to taste

Ingredients

Cook in the microwave for 2-3 depending on the consistency you like.  You can add the peanut butter either before or after…or both!  I personally like to do it after so I can eat some of the peanut butter straight haha.

Delicious... and I had crazy good energy today!

So in my next post, I want to discuss my goals and resolutions for 2011.  But that will be a long post, so before that, y’all need to check out my trip to Dinosaur BBQ over Christmas break!  While what I ordered was completely healthy, eating food I can’t control the preparation for is always hard for me.  However, being the Dinosaur BBQ is so good, I’m going to try and not even talk about my issues in this!  Just enjoy!

Outside...Rochester, New York

We got there right as the hockey game was over on Sunday night.  Even though we sent my mom and aunt ahead there was a pretty long wait… So I stood by the bar and talked to the guys working there and saw the orders going out:

Random tray of awesomeness

As we waited, we saw that one of the rooms was blocked off and was being manned by one of the biker dudes from Dinosaur… Turns out it was because probably half of the New England Patriots we in there!  It was most of the offense, definitely the offensive line.  Not to mention, running back Danny Woodhead, and the one and only, Tom Brady!  I’m not a huge Patriots fan, but this was pretty awesome.  I stood next to Woodhead headed to the bar…I couldn’t see Brady though. Finally, right before we left, I walked by the room and as I looked in, I looked right at him.  Pretty cool haha.  Apparently due to the storm, they couldn’t fly home, so hit up some BBQ awesomeness in Rochester!

Anyways, here’s what we had to eat:

BBQ chicken Plate (2 breasts for me): Apple brined, pit smoked and slathered with our original Senuous Slatherin' BBQ Sauce. I got healthy sides of rice and black beans

My brother Stewart: 3/4 rack St. Louis cut ribs are dry rubbed and slow pit smoked, then lightly glazed with our original BBQ sauce

Cousin Jay: Traditional Sampler: 1/4 Chicken(leg+thigh), 1/4 Rack of ribs & sliced Texas Beef Brisket..... What a goof

My cousin Colin also got the Tres Hombres: Spirited servings of Bar-B-Que pork, sliced Texas Beef Brisket and 1/4 rack of ribs.

I love eating with these guys… They are all healthy–Colin nearly went pro in the NFL after playing Corner for Cornell, and it helps me to see them eat real food, be happy, and NOT WORRY about it!

That’s all… More posts soon!

  1. Ever been to/heard of Dinosaur BBQ?
  2. Do you workout at a college Rec Center or a public gym?  What do you like/not like about it?
